Worryingly, it seems that some companies are still not even aware of their ESOS requirements and are unprepared for the deadline of 5th December.
DECC (Department of Energy Climate Change) research has shown that 78% of businesses are aware of their ESOS requirements and have taken steps to achieve compliance – which means that 1 in 5 are either NOT aware or have NOT taken steps towards complying.
ESOS – Who Has to Participate?
Some in the industry believe that the qualifying criteria have been confusing and that some companies may mistakenly believe that either a low turnover or low staff number means that they are exempt.
For clarification there are 2 qualifying criteria and a company can be affected either by having a certain number of staff or else via having a turnover/balance sheet over a certain figure
- Either – ANY UK business with over 250 staff – regardless of the turnover
- Or – ANY UK business with an annual turnover in excess of 50 million euro (£38,937,777), and an annual balance sheet total in excess of 43 million euro (£33,486,489) – regardless of the number of staff
Companies involved should now have received several communications from the Environment Agency – including reminders.
